Multilink, Teresta Group and Aethra.net donate videoconferencing equipment and provide free services to Quisqueya University in Haiti

Port-au-Prince, June 25, 2010 – Teresta Group Inc. and Aethra.net, in collaboration with Multilink S.A., donated a videoconferencing system to the Quisqueya University in Haiti. Multilink is also providing the university with free technical support and bandwidth to ensure the smooth running of its videoconference activities.

The Quisqueya University was heavily affected by the earthquake that hit the country in January. Its two campuses were entirely destroyed, along with the art gallery and the botanic garden located on the most recent one. Founded two decades ago, this prominent Haitian institution participates in many cooperative programs for education and research with Canadian and European universities. It is attended by nearly 2,000 students. From the beginning, many of them were deeply involved in relief efforts through walk-in and mobile clinics and a mentoring program aimed at children in refugee camps.

Videoconferencing with sister universities is one of the means by which these students can continue studying. “The big challenge”, says the rector Jacky Lumarque, “is to get the university up and running in a sustainable way. To do so, we must create now the conditions that will allow us to continue to provide education and serve the community, even without administrative buildings and classrooms. Information and communication technologies will help us begin this transition. On the longer term, they represent a wise choice for our institution.”

Is the Internet a fundamental right in Haiti? We want to hear you!

In a study realized by BBC almost four in five people around the world believe that access to the internet is a fundamental right.

The survey - of more than 27,000 adults across 26 countries, but not from Haiti - found strong support for net access on both sides of the digital divide.

Countries such as Finland and Estonia have already ruled that access is a human right for their citizens. International bodies such as the UN are also pushing for universal net access.

"The right to communicate cannot be ignored," Dr Hamadoun Toure, secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), told BBC News. "The internet is the most powerful potential source of enlightenment ever created." He said that governments must "regard the internet as basic infrastructure - just like roads, waste and water". "We have entered the knowledge society and everyone must have access to participate."

The survey also revealed divisions on the question of government oversight of some aspects of the net. Web users questioned in South Korea and Nigeria felt strongly that governments should never be involved in regulation of the internet. However, a majority of those in China and the many European countries disagreed. In the UK, for example, 55% believed that there was a case for some government regulation of the internet.

The BBC survey found that 87% of internet users felt internet access should be the "fundamental right of all people". More than 70% of non-users felt that they should have access to the net. Overall, almost 79% of those questioned said they either strongly agreed or somewhat agreed with the description of the internet as a fundamental right - whether they currently had access or not. Countries such as Mexico, Brazil and Turkey most strongly support the idea of net access as a right, the survey found. More than 90% of those surveyed in Turkey, for example, stated that internet access is a fundamental right - more than those in any other European Country.

One Laptop Per Children (OLPC) Haiti, pre-pilot evaluation report from IFAP Information society Observatory

The Haitian Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) has introduced one-to-one computing within the context of constructivist pedagogy—or student-centered learning—in the Haitian primary school system.

The XO laptop, an educational tool designed by One Laptop Per Child (OLPC, a nonprofit organization headquartered at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology), was selected as the educational device for the initial implementation of one-to-one computing, which took place during May–July 2008. MENFP carried out the initial implementation as a pre-pilot project conducted in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The purpose of the pre-pilot was to gain experience in preparation for the subsequent pilot project and to ascertain effective teacher preparation by identifying successful training methods and important content to be addressed during teacher training sessions.

A project team consisting of representatives of Teachers College, Columbia University and IDB evaluated the OLPC pre-pilot project. The purpose of the evaluation was to smooth the way for the subsequent implementation of the OLPC pilot project, which will assess the effectiveness of and determine the requirements for the nationwide implementation of one-to-one computing in Haiti.

Premye.ht, parce que ".ht" c'est plus cool!

Premye.ht n'invente rien. C'est un moteur de recherche comme Google, mais exclusivement dédié aux sites ".ht", l'enfant pauvre de l'Internet haïtien qui mérite plus de reconnaissance.

Premye.ht est un bon moteur de recherche. Il fait ce qu'il dit qu'il fait: répertorier les site ".ht". Il est rapide et efficace. Les recherches sont précises. Le contenu des sites référencés est complet.

Là où Premye.ht se distingue c'est qu'il donne toute sa raison d'être à l'extension ".ht" et se veut une invitation aux entreprises et aux institutions haïtiennes à valoriser et à se doter de sites Web contenant l'extension nationale d'Haïti: ".ht".

Pratiquement toutes les institutions gouvernementales d'Haïti s'affichent en ".ht". Malheureusement trop peu d'entreprises ont fait ce choix jusqu'à aujourd'hui, préférant le "dot com".

S'afficher ou pas avec l'extension ".ht" est un décision libre et non légiféré en Haïti. Mais pourquoi se présenter en ".com" quand on peut affirmer fièrement notre appartenance et notre différence en ".ht"?

Countries like Haiti have already benefited hugely from mobile phones. Mobile-phone access will soon be almost universal. The next task is to do the same for the Internet.

The reason why mobile phones are so valuable to people in the emerging world is that they are providing access to telecommunications for the very first time, rather than just being portable adjuncts to existing fixed-line phones, as in the rich world. For an American or a Canadian it was incremental. In Haiti it’s revolutionary. According to a recent study, adding an extra ten mobile phones per 100 people in a typical developing country boosts growth in GDP per person by 0.8 percentage points.

In 2000 the developing countries accounted for around one-quarter of the world’s 700 million or so mobile phones. By the beginning of 2009 their share had grown to three-quarters of a total of about 3.6 billion mobile phone users.

At current rates of growth it seems likely that within five years, and certainly within ten, everyone in the world who wants a mobile phone will probably have one. High-speed networks will be widespread in about every countries.

The next task is to ensure that everyone who wants to can use mobile technology to access the Internet. This will be done using low-cost laptops, or netbooks, connecting to the Internet via mobile networks. There could be 1.4 billion mobile-broadband subscribers by 2014.

Internet will be the highway of the masses!
