In response to the devastating January 12 earthquake, the theme of this year's contest is Haiti Renewed. Specifically, Konkou Business Ayiti is seeking Haitian entrepreneurs and sustainable businesses that can aid in the country's reconstruction. Konkou Business Ayiti invites applications from businesses that provide increased access to energy, water and sanitation and housing using green and renewable technologies. If you have a promising idea or business that falls into these categories, Haiti needs you!

What type of business Konkou Business Ayiti is looking for?

• "Green" businesses that are either established (less than 100 employees) or new.

• Examples of businesses: biodiesel, biogas, clean burning stoves, disaster-resistant housing, hydroelectric, plastics recycling, solar energy, water pumps, wind energy, or any other business that uses green technology to increase access to energy, water, sanitation or safe housing in Haiti.

• The business may be a product distributor, service provider or manufacturer.

• The business must present a positive environmental, social and/or economic impact in Haiti.

• The business can be based in any of Haiti's 10 departments.

What is the prize?

• A $10,000 grant

• Additional financing in the form of a very low interest loan (up to $40,000)

Multilink provides free high-speed Internet connectivity to Haiti Rewired’s Media Center and Hotel Oloffson in Port-au-Prince

Port-au-Prince, June 29, 2010 – Haiti-based Internet Service Provider Multilink will provide free high-speed internet access to the Haiti Rewired community Media Center at the Hotel Oloffson in Port-au-Prince. The Media Center will have a dedicated 1Mbps WiMax hot spot, a much-needed reliable Internet connection for Haiti Rewired bloggers and journalists as well as Hotel Oloffson’s staff and guests.

Created by the people of Wired.com soon after the earthquake, Haiti Rewired is a collaborative online community focused on aggregating technology and infrastructure solutions as the country plans its future. With more than 1,300 members comprised of experts and interested parties of all disciplines, the community has already shared thousands of blogs, images and comments about a wide range of topics, from technologies and communication to infrastructure and agriculture.

“The Haiti Rewired community and its members have achieved powerful results that represent what an active online community is capable of,” said Evan Hansen, Editor in Chief of Wired.com. “The new internet connection and media center ensure Haiti Rewired members in Port-au-Prince have a secure place to post content and share ideas. Multilink, Teresta Group and Aethra.net donate videoconferencing equipment and provide free services to Quisqueya University in Haiti

Port-au-Prince, June 25, 2010 – Teresta Group Inc. and Aethra.net, in collaboration with Multilink S.A., donated a videoconferencing system to the Quisqueya University in Haiti. Multilink is also providing the university with free technical support and bandwidth to ensure the smooth running of its videoconference activities.

The Quisqueya University was heavily affected by the earthquake that hit the country in January. Its two campuses were entirely destroyed, along with the art gallery and the botanic garden located on the most recent one. Founded two decades ago, this prominent Haitian institution participates in many cooperative programs for education and research with Canadian and European universities. It is attended by nearly 2,000 students. From the beginning, many of them were deeply involved in relief efforts through walk-in and mobile clinics and a mentoring program aimed at children in refugee camps.

Videoconferencing with sister universities is one of the means by which these students can continue studying. “The big challenge”, says the rector Jacky Lumarque, “is to get the university up and running in a sustainable way. To do so, we must create now the conditions that will allow us to continue to provide education and serve the community, even without administrative buildings and classrooms. Information and communication technologies will help us begin this transition. On the longer term, they represent a wise choice for our institution.”

L’Université Quisqueya a été durement touchée par le tremblement de terre de janvier dernier. In Memoriam:

A tribute to those who perished on January 12, 2010.

Each and every one of us, who survived the January 12, 2010 earthquake which took the lives of thousands and ravaged several cities in Haiti, has a story to tell. Some barely made it. Some were missed by seconds. Some made it with missing limbs or/and loved ones.

What, however, binds us all so firmly is a collective responsibility to use this tragedy as a catalyst for change. Real change. No more business as usual.

We’ve got to make sense out of the deaths of so many folks who only wanted to have a decent life like everyone else around the world. We must grab this “opportunity” to enhance our circumstances. The system has failed the people of Haiti for too long. Yes we must rebuild. No we cannot just rebuild physically for the reconstruction of Haiti cannot be complete without the reinforcement of its citizenry. We must reshape ourselves. We must remake ourselves. But we must all play our parts. Here’s mine: I want to use my music as an impetus to help implement a national civic and environmental education campaign.

A new Haitian citizen is needed today for Haiti.

Our hands shall embrace our neighbours from the Dominican Republic.

In the aftermath of the worst tragedy that has befallen Haiti, the Dominican Republic was the first country to come to our help. The Dominicans did not ask for permission to land nor to cross the border. Bolstered by a deep sense of gratitude, and armed with my music, I traveled to the Dominican Republic to thank my neighbours. When I met for the first time Mr. José Rafael Lantigua, the country’s Minister of Culture, he did not hesitate for a second to introduce me to the great conductor and arranger, Maestro Jose Antonio Molina.

Environ 250,000 immeubles privés et publics sont détruits. Tous les symboles de L’État ont été durement touchés : le palais national, le parlement, le palais de justice.

Au delà des pertes matérielles, on a assisté à un exode massif de nos ressources humaines qualifiées qui sont venues s’ajouter à nos cadres qui, déjà, avaient élu domicile à l’extérieur.

Le président de la République M. René Préval a déclaré qu’il faut refonder l’État. Le Premier ministre, M. Jean-Max Bellerive dans une de ses plus récentes interventions a confirmé : « La reconstruction et la refondation ne seront pas au rendez vous si la diaspora n’y est pas intégrée. Une diaspora qui est disponible et qui se prépare à travailler également pour la reconstruction d’Haïti. Pour la refondation d’Haiti, il faut rapidement trouver les passerelles pour l’intégrer. »

Peace Dividend Trust a mis en ligne fin Janvier 2010 un site web interactif Haiti.BuildingMarkets.Org pour promouvoir la reconstruction par l’approvisionnement local en Haïti.

L'idée principale est de mettre en relation les acheteurs des ONG et des organisations internationales avec les entreprises haïtiennes capables de répondre à leurs besoins en produits et services. Le calcul est simple: en favorisant la reconstruction par les achats locaux les revenus reviennent directement dans l'économie haïtienne et contribuent à l'essor national.

Peace Dividend Trust oeuvre depuis 2006 à mettre en place des stratégies qui encouragent les achats locaux dans différents pays, dont Haïti, l'Afghanistan, le Timor Oriental.

En raison de la crise provoqué par le tremblement de terre du 12 janvier dernier, Peace Dividend Trust répond aux demandes de biens et services de première urgence des ONG et des organisations internationales (nourriture, matériel médical, eau, véhicules, services Internet…) en fournissant une liste de fournisseurs adéquats haïtiens vérifiés par ses soins et une liste non-vérifiée pour faire connaître l’offre la plus large possible.

Multilink is deeply united with Haiti’s people, institutions and enterprises throughout the ordeal facing all of us.

The earthquake that devastated our country shows the crucial role played by the Internet in a time of crisis or disaster, when other means of communication are no longer available. Since day one, on January 12, Multilink’s Internet services have remained operational. Furthermore, we were the first to do Live Video Streaming from Haiti to maintain communication with the rest of the world.

"Keeping Haiti's Internet Alive" (PBS Frontline World)

With lives in the balance and medicine in short supply, the Internet could seem like an afterthought in Haiti. But Paolo Chilosi, who runs Multilink, a leading Internet provider in Haiti, says the net is as vital as food and water. Using generators powered by gas and solar and GREAT help from Cisco Systems TACOPS which flew in a team of engineers by helicopter this week, Chilosi is getting crucial institutions like banks, radio stations and the office of President René Préval (who the world has been waiting to hear from) back online.

But logistics, he says, are a nightmare, and most of his staff has fled. In this interview over webcam with FRONTLINE/World, Chilosi says he desperately needs skilled volunteers to come to the island to help shore up the Internet.
