AIDG is pleased to announce its 2nd business plan competition, Konkou Business Ayiti.

In response to the devastating January 12 earthquake, the theme of this year's contest is Haiti Renewed. Specifically, Konkou Business Ayiti is seeking Haitian entrepreneurs and sustainable businesses that can aid in the country's reconstruction. Konkou Business Ayiti invites applications from businesses that provide increased access to energy, water and sanitation and housing using green and renewable technologies. If you have a promising idea or business that falls into these categories, Haiti needs you!

What type of business Konkou Business Ayiti is looking for?

• "Green" businesses that are either established (less than 100 employees) or new.

• Examples of businesses: biodiesel, biogas, clean burning stoves, disaster-resistant housing, hydroelectric, plastics recycling, solar energy, water pumps, wind energy, or any other business that uses green technology to increase access to energy, water, sanitation or safe housing in Haiti.

• The business may be a product distributor, service provider or manufacturer.

• The business must present a positive environmental, social and/or economic impact in Haiti.

• The business can be based in any of Haiti's 10 departments.

What is the prize?

• A $10,000 grant

• Additional financing in the form of a very low interest loan (up to $40,000)

• Two years of technical and logistical assistance

• Two years of business planning and administrative support.

Multilink, Teresta Group and Aethra.net donate videoconferencing equipment and provide free services to Quisqueya University in Haiti

Port-au-Prince, June 25, 2010 – Teresta Group Inc. and Aethra.net, in collaboration with Multilink S.A., donated a videoconferencing system to the Quisqueya University in Haiti. Multilink is also providing the university with free technical support and bandwidth to ensure the smooth running of its videoconference activities.

The Quisqueya University was heavily affected by the earthquake that hit the country in January. Its two campuses were entirely destroyed, along with the art gallery and the botanic garden located on the most recent one. Founded two decades ago, this prominent Haitian institution participates in many cooperative programs for education and research with Canadian and European universities. It is attended by nearly 2,000 students. From the beginning, many of them were deeply involved in relief efforts through walk-in and mobile clinics and a mentoring program aimed at children in refugee camps.

Videoconferencing with sister universities is one of the means by which these students can continue studying. “The big challenge”, says the rector Jacky Lumarque, “is to get the university up and running in a sustainable way. To do so, we must create now the conditions that will allow us to continue to provide education and serve the community, even without administrative buildings and classrooms. Information and communication technologies will help us begin this transition. On the longer term, they represent a wise choice for our institution.”

L’Université Quisqueya a été durement touchée par le tremblement de terre de janvier dernier. The Internet Society organize a conference in Washington D.C. on connecting the unconnected. Internet 2020: The Next Billion Users

The Internet Society, in collaboration with the Greater Washington DC Chapter is holding a regional conference in Washington, DC on Thursday, 29 April 2010. The conference, part of the Internet Society's INET series, will be focused on connecting the unconnected with the theme of INTERNET 2020 – The next billion users.

Today, more than a billion people use the Internet on a regular basis. Within ten years, that number could double—or triple—as smartphones, netbooks, and other devices become more affordable and new networks connect underserved communities. This conference will explore the most exciting new Internet applications in countries around the world, feature leading Internet visionaries helping to shape the future of the Internet, and debate what can—or must—be done to “connect the next billion” and ensure that the Internet continues to be a platform for innovation.

INET Washington DC will bring together regional and international policy and technical experts, government, network operators, the private sector and the user community. The conference will explore the technologies that will connect the next billion users, discuss how to instill trust in the new technology, and explore how users are using the technology. We will also include technology and policy “slams” to encourage participants to think creatively together about the best technologies and policies that will change the way the Internet develops in the coming years. Finally, INET Washington DC will provide a launching pad for our DC Chapter activities for months to come.
